Anemia is more frequent in the elderly; its incidence increases in advanced age and is associated with the high prevalence of chronic and degenerative diseases. The main objective was to determine the demographic and clinical characteristics associated with anemia in the elderly. A quantitative, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, retrospective study was carried out on a sample of 352 older adults, through a review of the clinical records of the Clinica Privada Latinoamericana in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The prevalence of anemia was 56.53%, with a higher frequency in older adults (59.5%); there was an increase in the male sex (58.6%) and in patients residing in rural areas (59.2%). Comorbidities (diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease and oncologic disease) were statistically associated with anemia. In conclusion, it was shown that anemia is more frequent in the elderly, and it is recommended that prevention programs be carried out and that health professionals pay greater attention to anemia.
